William Alexander Smith (politician)
William Alexander Smith (born November 13, 1862, died June 11, 1929) was a Republican politician from Michigan. He served in the United States House of Representatives, representing Michigan's 4th congressional district, from 1903 to 1923.
Smith was born in Dundee, Michigan. He attended the public schools and later studied law. He was admitted to the bar in 1885 and commenced practice in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He served as a member of the Grand Rapids Board of Education and was prosecuting attorney of Kent County, Michigan, from 1895 to 1899.
Elected to Congress in 1902, Smith served ten consecutive terms. During his tenure, he was known for his work on matters related to waterways and navigation. He was a delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1920.
Following his retirement from Congress in 1923, Smith resumed the practice of law in Grand Rapids. He died there in 1929 and is interred in Woodlawn Cemetery.
