Wattisham

Wattisham is a village and civil parish in Suffolk, England. Located approximately 6 miles (9.7 km) southeast of Stowmarket, it falls within the Mid Suffolk district.

Historically, Wattisham is primarily an agricultural community. However, its main claim to fame is its association with the Royal Air Force base, RAF Wattisham.

RAF Wattisham, established in 1939, played a crucial role during World War II and throughout the Cold War. Initially a bomber station, it later became a fighter base and home to various interceptor squadrons. The airfield saw significant activity during the Battle of Britain. Post-war, it housed jet fighters, including those equipped to intercept Soviet aircraft.

The airfield transitioned from RAF to Army Air Corps control in 1993 and is now known as Wattisham Flying Station. It currently serves as a base for Army Air Corps helicopters, including the Apache attack helicopter. The presence of the Flying Station continues to be a significant factor in the local economy and community.

The village itself is relatively small, with a population of around 300 people. The parish church is dedicated to Saint Nicholas. While the Flying Station dominates the landscape, the village retains a rural character with agricultural land and traditional housing.
