WKBS-TV
WKBS-TV was a television station broadcasting on channel 48 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States. It operated from September 1, 1965, to August 29, 1983.
Initially, WKBS-TV was owned by Kaiser Broadcasting as part of a group of UHF independent stations. It provided a mix of syndicated programming, movies, and local sports coverage. The station was known for broadcasting Philadelphia Phillies baseball games and Philadelphia 76ers basketball games.
In 1980, Kaiser Broadcasting sold its remaining stations, including WKBS-TV, to Field Communications. Field continued WKBS-TV's independent format. However, facing increasing competition in the Philadelphia television market, along with financial difficulties at Field Communications, the station ceased operations in 1983.
After WKBS-TV went off the air, its channel 48 allocation was acquired by another broadcaster, and a new station, WGBS-TV (now WPVI-DT2), began broadcasting on that channel. Thus, while the call letters WKBS-TV are no longer in use, the channel 48 frequency continues to serve the Philadelphia television market.
