Via crucis (Liszt)

Via crucis is a late work by Franz Liszt, composed in 1879. Its full title is Via crucis: Les 14 Stations de la Croix (The 14 Stations of the Cross). It is a setting of the Stations of the Cross for mixed choir, solo voices, and organ (or piano). The work is notable for its austere and experimental harmonic language, reflecting Liszt's increasing religious devotion and his move away from the Romantic style of his earlier works. It is considered an important example of his late style and a significant contribution to liturgical music. The text is derived from traditional Catholic prayers and hymns associated with the Stations of the Cross. The work premiered posthumously in 1879.
