VFA-86 "Sidewinders"

VFA-86, also known as the "Sidewinders," is a Strike Fighter Squadron of the United States Navy. Based at Naval Air Station Lemoore, California, the squadron flies the F/A-18E Super Hornet.

History

The squadron has a long and storied history, having been originally established as VF-86 on May 1, 1951. It has undergone several redesignations and aircraft transitions throughout its service. Earlier designations include Attack Squadron VA-86 and later Strike Fighter Squadron VFA-86. Key aircraft flown include the F-8 Crusader, A-7 Corsair II, and the F/A-18 Hornet before transitioning to the Super Hornet.

Mission
