VéloSoleX

The VéloSoleX, often shortened to Solex, is a French moped, technically a motor-assisted bicycle. Production began in 1946 and continued until 1988 in France, with manufacturing under license continuing in other countries for several years afterwards. Its defining feature is a small engine mounted above the front wheel, powering the bicycle by friction against the front tire.

The VéloSoleX gained popularity due to its simplicity, fuel efficiency, and affordability. It was marketed as an alternative to a bicycle, allowing riders to travel longer distances with less effort. The low cost of operation and maintenance further contributed to its widespread adoption, particularly in post-war France.

Different models of the VéloSoleX were produced over the years, each with slight variations in engine size, design, and features. However, the fundamental principle of operation – the friction-drive engine – remained consistent.
