Uk (urban-type settlement)
An urban-type settlement (Uk), sometimes also translated as "urban settlement," is a type of populated place in several Eastern European countries, particularly those formerly part of the Soviet Union. It is a formal designation, typically ranking between rural localities (such as villages) and cities in terms of size and amenities.
The specific criteria defining an urban-type settlement vary by country and even within different regions of the same country, but generally, they are characterized by having:
- A substantial non-agricultural population (often a majority).
- Developed infrastructure and services, such as schools, hospitals, shops, and administrative buildings.
- Industrial enterprises, construction sites, railway stations, power plants, or other similar facilities.

Urban-type settlements were established primarily during the Soviet era to manage and administer growing populations concentrated around industrial and infrastructure projects in rural areas.
