USS Nitze
The USS Nitze (DDG-94) is an Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer in the United States Navy. Named in honor of Paul Nitze, a former Secretary of the Navy and Cold War strategist, the ship was commissioned on March 5, 2005.
The USS Nitze is equipped with the Aegis Combat System and is capable of performing a wide range of missions, including anti-air warfare, anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface warfare, and strike operations. It is armed with Tomahawk cruise missiles, Standard missiles, Evolved Sea Sparrow Missiles (ESSM), a 5-inch gun, and close-in weapon systems. The ship also has a flight deck and hangar for two SH-60 Seahawk helicopters, which enhance its anti-submarine warfare and search and rescue capabilities.
The USS Nitze is homeported in Norfolk, Virginia and has participated in numerous deployments and exercises around the world, supporting various U.S. foreign policy objectives and maritime security operations. Its motto is "Per Scientiam Ad Pacem" (Through Knowledge to Peace), reflecting Paul Nitze's commitment to diplomacy and understanding as means to achieve peace.
