USS Merrimack (1798)

The USS Merrimack (1798) was one of the original six frigates authorized by the Naval Act of 1794. She was designed by Joshua Humphreys and built by Stephen and Timothy Upham at Newburyport, Massachusetts. Her construction was supervised by Captain Samuel Nicholson. Named for the Merrimack River in Massachusetts, the Merrimack was intended to be a 36-gun frigate, but was eventually completed and armed with 32 guns.

Her early service included patrols in the West Indies during the Quasi-War with France, convoying merchant ships, and participating in actions against French privateers. Notable commanders during this period included Captain Moses Brown.

Later, during the Barbary Wars, the Merrimack served in the Mediterranean Sea, participating in the blockade of Tripoli and other related naval operations.

Decommissioned in 1801 and later rebuilt, she returned to service, participating in the War of 1812. After the War of 1812, she remained in ordinary until being broken up in 1833. Her service marked a significant contribution to the early development and establishment of the United States Navy.
