USS Fulmar (AMc-46)

USS Fulmar (AMc-46) was an Accentor-class coastal minesweeper acquired by the U.S. Navy for the dangerous task of removing mines from minefields laid in coastal waterways. Fulmar served primarily in the Pacific Ocean during World War II.

Laid down on 16 April 1941 by the Gibbs Gas Engine Co., Jacksonville, Florida, Fulmar was launched on 18 October 1941; sponsored by Mrs. P. M. Bucklew; and commissioned on 22 April 1942, Lt. (jg.) J. A. Duncan, USNR, in command.

Following shakedown off the Florida coast, Fulmar steamed to Key West, Florida, and then proceeded to Trinidad, British West Indies. Escorting a convoy from Trinidad to Recife, Brazil, the minesweeper continued south along the Brazilian coast to Rio de Janeiro, and returned to Trinidad in July 1942.

Fulmar departed Trinidad on 1 August 1942 and escorted a convoy to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, before proceeding to Charleston, South Carolina, for overhaul. In October, she transited the Panama Canal and reported for duty with the Pacific Fleet.

Assigned to the Western Sea Frontier, Fulmar operated as a patrol and escort vessel along the coast of California for the next two years. In December 1944, she began duty as a target ship for fighter aircraft at the Naval Air Station, San Diego.

After the war, Fulmar was decommissioned on 11 January 1946, and struck from the Navy Register on 29 January 1946. She was sold on 12 November 1946 to Joseph C. Radez of San Pedro, California.
