USS Chesapeake (ID-3395)
The USS Chesapeake (ID-3395) was a United States Navy transport ship that served during World War I. Originally the German passenger liner Neckar, built in 1900 by Blohm & Voss in Hamburg, Germany, she was seized by the United States government in 1917 following America's entry into the war. The ship was renamed USS Chesapeake and designated with the identification number ID-3395.
As a troop transport, USS Chesapeake was primarily employed in ferrying American soldiers to Europe to participate in the war effort. Following the Armistice, she was used to bring troops back to the United States. After the war, she was decommissioned and eventually returned to her original owners, the North German Lloyd shipping company, in 1920. They subsequently restored her original name, Neckar, and she returned to civilian passenger service.
