Thomas Earp (sculptor)

Thomas Earp (1828 – 1893) was a British sculptor, notable for his work in the Gothic Revival style. He is particularly remembered for his ecclesiastical sculpture and architectural carving, contributing significantly to the decoration of churches and public buildings throughout England.

Earp was born in Oxford, and early in his career worked as a stonemason. He established his own carving and sculpture business, becoming a prolific supplier of architectural sculpture during the Victorian era. His workshop employed a significant number of craftsmen and played a key role in the execution of large-scale projects.

His works include carvings on buildings designed by prominent architects such as George Gilbert Scott, William Butterfield, and Alfred Waterhouse. He often worked in conjunction with these architects, translating their designs into stone.

Examples of his work can be found in numerous cathedrals, churches, and public buildings, including Exeter Cathedral, Worcester Cathedral, and Manchester Town Hall. His output ranged from small decorative details to large-scale figurative sculpture. He is recognized for his skill in interpreting architectural styles and for the quality of his craftsmanship.

Earp's influence extended beyond his direct commissions, as his workshop trained many sculptors and carvers who went on to their own successful careers. His legacy remains visible in the architectural landscape of Victorian Britain.
