The Grays (band)

The Grays were an American power pop supergroup formed in Los Angeles, California in 1993. The band consisted of Jon Brion (vocals, guitar, keyboards), Jason Falkner (vocals, guitar, bass), Buddy Judge (vocals, guitar, keyboards), and Dan McCarroll (drums).

Despite only releasing one studio album, Ro Sham Bo, in 1994, The Grays have garnered a cult following due to their sophisticated songwriting, intricate arrangements, and melodic sensibilities, often drawing comparisons to The Beatles, XTC, and Jellyfish.

Prior to forming The Grays, each member had achieved recognition in other projects. Brion was a sought-after session musician and composer, Falkner had been a member of Jellyfish, Judge was a solo artist, and McCarroll was a veteran drummer.

Ro Sham Bo was critically acclaimed upon release but did not achieve significant commercial success. The album is noted for its complex harmonies, quirky instrumentation, and introspective lyrics. Notable tracks include "Very Best Years," "Same Thing," and "Oh Well, Maybe."

Internal tensions and creative differences led to the band's breakup shortly after the release of Ro Sham Bo. Each member subsequently pursued solo careers or returned to session work. Jon Brion, in particular, went on to become a highly respected film composer and producer.

Despite their brief existence, The Grays' music continues to be praised by critics and musicians alike, and Ro Sham Bo is considered a seminal album in the power pop genre. Their influence can be heard in numerous contemporary bands. While there have been occasional rumors of a reunion, the band members have remained focused on their individual projects.
