The D4
The D4, often capitalized, is a shorthand term referencing a four-sided die. It is commonly used in role-playing games (RPGs), tabletop games, and other games of chance where a random number between 1 and 4 is required. The "D" stands for "die" (or "dice," in plural contexts) and the "4" represents the number of faces the die possesses.
The D4 has a distinctive tetrahedral shape, meaning it is a triangular pyramid. Unlike standard six-sided dice (D6), the D4 does not typically have a single face that lands on the bottom to indicate the result. Instead, the result is determined by reading the number that appears at the bottom point of the upward-facing faces. Variations exist, but this is the most common convention.
Due to its shape, the D4 is often considered one of the less easily rolled dice in a set. Its points can also pose a minor safety hazard if stepped on or handled carelessly.
In RPGs, the D4 is often used to determine relatively small amounts of damage, the outcome of minor actions, or other events where a limited range of possibilities is desired. The probability of rolling any single number on a fair D4 is 1/4 or 25%.
