Tempest (1928 film)

Tempest is a 1928 American silent film directed by Sam Taylor, although Lewis Milestone replaced Taylor during production. It stars John Barrymore, Camilla Horn, and Louis Wolheim. The film is a historical drama set during the Russian Revolution.

The film's plot centers around Ivan Markov, a peasant who rises through the ranks of the Tsarist army to become a sergeant. He falls in love with a beautiful aristocrat, Princess Tamara, but their romance is complicated by the social and political upheaval of the revolution. The film depicts the brutality and chaos of the revolution, as well as the personal struggles of individuals caught in its wake.

Tempest is notable for its elaborate sets and large-scale battle scenes. It was a significant box office success for United Artists. The film was partially lost for many years but was later restored using surviving footage. The restoration involved reinserting dialogue titles and reconstructed scenes.

The film received Academy Award nominations for Best Art Direction (William Cameron Menzies) and Best Writing, Original Story (Lewis Milestone).
