Stillwater (band)

Stillwater was an American Southern rock band formed in Macon, Georgia in the early 1970s. They are primarily known for their 1977 hit single "Mind Bender."

The band was composed of Gregg Allman's former keyboardist and guitarist Chuck Leavell, along with vocalist/guitarist Mike Causey, bassist Bob Spearman, and drummer Joe Lanier. Later, Al Scarborough replaced Spearman on bass.

Stillwater gained popularity in the Southeastern United States, touring extensively and opening for acts such as the Allman Brothers Band, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and the Charlie Daniels Band. Their self-titled debut album, Stillwater, released in 1977, was their most commercially successful. "Mind Bender" reached the Top 30 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

They released a second album, I Reserve the Right!, in 1978, but it did not achieve the same level of success as their debut. The band ultimately dissolved in the early 1980s.

Despite their relatively short career, Stillwater is remembered as a notable act in the Southern rock genre. The film Almost Famous featured a fictional band also named Stillwater, which caused some confusion with the real band. The fictional band was named by the director Cameron Crowe, who was unaware of the existence of the actual band at the time. This led to a legal settlement where the real Stillwater received a payment and a credit in the film.
