Station Square (Tbilisi Metro)
Station Square is a major interchange station on the Tbilisi Metro system in Tbilisi, Georgia. It is actually two physically separate stations, connected by a long underground passage. One station, officially known as Vazha-Pshavela station (formerly Saburtalo station) until 2007, serves the Saburtalo Line (also known as Line 2). The other station serves the Akhmeteli-Varketili Line (Line 1).
The Line 1 station opened on January 11, 1966, as part of the initial segment of the Tbilisi Metro. The Line 2 station opened on September 15, 1979. The interchange is heavily used by passengers transferring between the two lines.
Station Square is located near the Tbilisi Central Railway Station and a major marketplace, making it a vital transportation hub for the city. The surrounding area is characterized by commercial activity and transportation infrastructure. The stations themselves are deep-level and feature typical Soviet-era metro architecture, though renovations have occurred over time to modernize the facilities.
The name "Station Square" is derived from its proximity to the central railway station and the surrounding square. The Line 2 station's former name, Vazha-Pshavela, referred to a prominent Georgian writer, while Saburtalo refers to a district in Tbilisi. The renaming in 2007 aligned the station's name with the major interchange point it represents.
