St John Altarpiece (Memling)
The St John Altarpiece, also known as the Saint John Altarpiece or the Mystic Marriage of St Catherine Altarpiece, is a triptych by the Early Netherlandish master Hans Memling. It was commissioned for the Old St. John's Hospital (Sint-Janshospitaal) in Bruges, Belgium, where it remains today.
The central panel depicts the Mystic Marriage of St. Catherine. Catherine of Alexandria, kneeling on the left, is being betrothed to the infant Christ, who is held by the Virgin Mary. Saints John the Baptist and John the Evangelist stand on either side of the central group. Angels play musical instruments, and the scene is set within a rich and detailed architectural setting.
The left wing portrays the beheading of St. John the Baptist. The scene depicts Salome presenting the head of John the Baptist to Herod.
The right wing shows St. John the Evangelist on Patmos. The evangelist is shown writing the Book of Revelation, with the vision of the Virgin Mary surrounded by angels appearing before him.
The altarpiece is notable for its vivid colors, meticulous detail, and harmonious composition, reflecting Memling's characteristic style. It is considered a masterpiece of Flemish painting and an important example of the religious art of the 15th century. The work demonstrates Memling's skill in portraying serene figures and creating a sense of calm contemplation.
