Sorcery (video game)

Sorcery is a fantasy adventure gamebook series adapted into an interactive video game, originally created by Steve Jackson (not to be confused with the American game designer of the same name). The video game adaptation was developed by Inkle and published in four parts between 2013 and 2016.

The game translates the core mechanics of the original gamebooks to a digital format, emphasizing narrative choice, exploration, and strategic combat. Players assume the role of a hero on a quest to retrieve the Crown of Kings from the Archmage of Mampang Fortress. The journey takes them through a richly detailed fantasy world filled with perilous encounters, riddles, and moral dilemmas.

A key feature of the game is its "Ink" narrative engine, developed by Inkle. This system allows for dynamic storytelling, where player decisions have lasting consequences on the game world and narrative. The game tracks choices, relationships with characters, and the impact of spells and items, creating a highly personalized experience.

Combat is handled through a unique system involving strategic resource management and bluffing. Players must anticipate enemy attacks and choose their own actions wisely, balancing offensive and defensive maneuvers. Magic plays a significant role, with players learning and casting spells using a word-based system reminiscent of the original gamebooks.

Each of the four parts of the Sorcery video game covers a section of the original gamebook series:

  • Part 1: The Shamutanti Hills
  • Part 2: Kharé - Cityport of Traps
  • Part 3: The Seven Serpents
  • Part 4: The Crown of Kings

The adaptation is notable for its faithfulness to the source material while simultaneously expanding upon it. Inkle added new areas, characters, and storylines, enriching the original narrative while retaining the spirit of adventure and player agency.
