Sonny Hall (unionist)
Sonny Hall was a Northern Irish loyalist paramilitary and trade unionist. He was a prominent figure within the Ulster Volunteer Force (UVF) and also held a significant position within the trade union movement in Northern Ireland, specifically at the Belfast docks.
Hall was known for his involvement in UVF activities during the Troubles, a period of ethno-nationalist conflict in Northern Ireland. He was considered a leading figure in the UVF's operations in the Belfast area.
Alongside his paramilitary involvement, Hall was a leading shop steward at the Belfast docks, representing the interests of the dockworkers. This position gave him considerable influence within the workforce and also connected him to wider social and economic issues within the community. His ability to operate in both the paramilitary and trade union spheres highlighted the complex and often overlapping roles that individuals played during the Troubles.
His activities were often controversial, and he was a figure of both fear and respect within the loyalist community. He represents a complex example of the intersection between paramilitary violence, working-class politics, and trade unionism in Northern Ireland during a period of intense political and social upheaval.
