Skeleton Key (band)

Skeleton Key was an experimental rock band formed in New York City in the mid-1990s. Characterized by their unconventional instrumentation, DIY aesthetic, and energetic live performances, the band blended elements of punk rock, art rock, and noise rock.

The core members of Skeleton Key were Erik Sanko (vocals, bass, various found objects), Chris Maxwell (guitar, vocals), and Rick Lee (drums, percussion). Other musicians contributed to the band's recordings and live performances over the years.

Skeleton Key's distinctive sound stemmed in part from their use of repurposed and modified instruments. Sanko, in particular, was known for incorporating unconventional objects into his bass playing, such as metal pipes, pots, and other scrap materials to create unique percussive sounds.

The band released several EPs and albums, including Skeleton Key (1996), Fantastic Spikes (1997), Gravity is the Enemy (2002) and Obtainium (2007). Their music often featured complex rhythms, dissonant harmonies, and lyrical themes that explored dark humor, science fiction, and social commentary.

Skeleton Key toured extensively throughout the United States and Europe, building a dedicated following with their dynamic and unpredictable stage shows. The band's live performances were known for their chaotic energy and improvisational elements.

The band has been largely inactive since the late 2000s, with members pursuing other musical projects. Erik Sanko has focused on his solo career and theatrical work, while Chris Maxwell has worked as a composer and producer.
