Sir Barton Stakes (USA)
The Sir Barton Stakes is an American thoroughbred horse race held annually at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland. It is typically run on the undercard of the Preakness Stakes, the second leg of the American Triple Crown.
The race is named in honor of Sir Barton, the first horse to win the American Triple Crown in 1919. It is contested on dirt at a distance of 1 1/16 miles (8.5 furlongs) and is open to three-year-old horses who have not won a graded stakes race.
Established in 2019, the Sir Barton Stakes was created to provide an opportunity for three-year-olds that did not compete in the Kentucky Derby or Preakness Stakes to race on a prominent stage during Preakness weekend. Its creation aimed to add further depth and excitement to the already popular racing event.
The race carries a purse of $100,000 and serves as a stepping stone for horses looking to improve their racing record and potentially compete in higher-level stakes races later in their careers.
