Shi Jian (sailor)

Shi Jian (侍監) was an official title in imperial China, primarily associated with the Ming dynasty. It referred to eunuchs who served as attendants and overseers within the imperial court, particularly within the Directorate of Palace Attendants (司禮監, Sili Jian). While often translated as "attendant supervisor" or similar terms implying oversight, "sailor" is inaccurate and likely the result of a misinterpretation or misunderstanding.

The Sili Jian was one of the most powerful eunuch agencies, responsible for handling imperial documents, verifying memorials submitted to the emperor, and even making recommendations. Shi Jian acted under the direction of higher-ranking eunuchs in the Sili Jian, carrying out tasks related to document management, communication, and supervision of other palace staff.

Their duties could range from routine clerical work to more sensitive tasks depending on the trust placed in them by the emperor and their superiors. The specific responsibilities of a Shi Jian depended on their rank and assignment within the Sili Jian. Their influence was significant, as they often acted as intermediaries between the emperor and other government officials. This proximity to power made the position susceptible to corruption and abuse, which contributed to negative perceptions of eunuchs during the Ming dynasty.
