Shadow Project (album)
Shadow Project was the second and final studio album by the American deathrock band Shadow Project, released in 1991 by Triple X Records. This album marked a significant shift in the band's sound compared to their earlier, more raw, self-titled debut. Shadow Project embraced a more polished and goth rock-influenced sound, incorporating elements of industrial music and electronic textures.
The album featured Rozz Williams (vocals, keyboards) and Eva O (guitar, vocals), core members of the band, along with other contributors. The lyrical themes explored on Shadow Project delve into subjects such as death, darkness, spirituality, and personal struggles, consistent with Williams' previous work. The production quality was noticeably higher than their debut, resulting in a denser and more layered sound.
While the album was critically acclaimed by some within the goth and deathrock scenes for its ambition and darker atmospherics, it also received mixed reviews from those who preferred the rawer sound of the band's earlier work. It is considered a key release in the late stages of the early deathrock movement and contributed to the evolution of goth rock's diverse sound. The album has been re-released several times.
