Sasun (historical region)

Sasun, also spelled Sassoun or Sason, was a semi-autonomous Armenian principality in the historical region of Greater Armenia, located in what is now southeastern Turkey, roughly corresponding to the modern-day districts of Sason and Kozluk in Batman Province. Known for its mountainous terrain and fiercely independent inhabitants, Sasun maintained a considerable degree of autonomy from larger Armenian kingdoms and later, from Ottoman rule.

Historically, Sasun's resistance to foreign powers and its rugged landscape allowed it to function as a refuge for Armenians fleeing persecution. Its inhabitants developed a distinct cultural identity, preserving unique traditions and dialects. The people of Sasun were renowned for their military prowess and their defense of Armenian identity.

Sasun is particularly known for its role in the Armenian national epic, Sasuntsi Davit ("David of Sasun"), a cycle of oral folk tales that celebrate the heroic exploits of the Sasun clan and their struggle against foreign invaders. This epic, passed down through generations of bards and storytellers, cemented Sasun's place in Armenian national consciousness as a symbol of resistance, freedom, and cultural preservation.

While Sasun never formed a fully independent kingdom, its semi-autonomous status and its role in resisting external domination made it a significant region in Armenian history. The region suffered greatly during the Armenian Genocide in the early 20th century, with its Armenian population largely decimated or displaced. Today, the area is primarily inhabited by Kurds, though its Armenian heritage remains a potent symbol of the past.
