Sarbhan

Sarbhan, in Irish mythology, is a hound belonging to the legendary hero Fionn mac Cumhaill. Accounts of Sarbhan vary, but he is primarily known from the tale "The Boyhood Deeds of Fionn."

In this story, Fionn, while still a young boy known as Deimne, is sent to be fostered by the druid Finegas (also known as Finn Eces) to learn wisdom and martial skills. Finegas had been waiting many years to catch the Salmon of Knowledge, a fish that, when eaten, would grant the eater all the knowledge in the world. Finally, he catches the salmon and instructs Deimne to cook it, warning him not to taste it.

While cooking, Deimne burns his thumb and instinctively puts it in his mouth to ease the pain. This simple act grants him the knowledge instead of Finegas. When Finegas sees this, he understands that Deimne is the prophesied hero Fionn and gives him the salmon to eat.

The role of Sarbhan in this narrative is sometimes described as being present during the cooking of the Salmon of Knowledge. However, the primary association of Sarbhan is with Fionn's later adventures. He is generally depicted as a loyal and powerful hunting dog, contributing to Fionn's exploits and aiding him in various quests. The specific details of Sarbhan's breed, appearance, and individual stories are often lacking in detailed description compared to other figures in the Fionn Cycle, but he nonetheless holds a place as a significant companion to the hero.
