SM UB-14

SM UB-14 was a German Type UB II submarine, a class of coastal submarines, used by the Imperial German Navy (Kaiserliche Marine) during World War I. Commissioned in April 1915, UB-14 conducted several patrols in the Mediterranean Sea, achieving notable success in sinking Allied merchant vessels and warships.

Specifically, UB-14 was involved in the sinking of the British pre-dreadnought battleship HMS Triumph near the Dardanelles on May 25, 1915, and the British battleship HMS Majestic two days later in the same area. These sinkings represented significant losses for the Royal Navy during the Gallipoli Campaign.

Commanded by Kapitänleutnant Heino von Heimburg, UB-14 was active in disrupting Allied shipping lanes and contributing to the overall U-boat campaign. Its operational area largely focused on the Mediterranean theater.

The submarine was eventually scuttled by its crew near Pola (present-day Pula, Croatia) in July 1916, after it ran aground and suffered damage while attempting to attack the Italian protected cruiser Giuseppe Garibaldi. The crew was captured. UB-14's career, though relatively short, highlights the impact of U-boats on naval warfare during World War I, particularly in the Mediterranean.
