Russell (Ontario provincial electoral district)

Russell was a provincial electoral district in Ontario, Canada, that existed at various times between 1867 and 1999. It elected one member to the Legislative Assembly of Ontario. The district was named after the geographic township of Russell, which itself was named in honour of Peter Russell, Administrator of Upper Canada.

The riding was first created for the initial 1867 provincial election. It was abolished in 1934 and re-established in 1987. The riding was abolished again in 1999, with its territory becoming part of the new riding of Glengarry—Prescott—Russell.

Over its history, the Russell riding was generally considered a Conservative leaning riding, although it occasionally elected Liberal members. Its composition varied based on periodic redistributions of electoral boundaries to reflect population shifts. The riding generally encompassed the eastern portions of Ontario, including communities such as Russell and Embrun. The agricultural character of the area was often a key factor influencing its political leanings.
