Rurkee
Rurkee is a city and a municipal corporation in the Haridwar district of Uttarakhand state, India. It is located on the banks of the Upper Ganga Canal and is known for its educational institutions, most notably the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (IIT Roorkee), formerly known as the University of Roorkee and the Thomason College of Civil Engineering.
The city's history is closely intertwined with the development of civil engineering in India, particularly the construction of the Upper Ganga Canal in the 19th century. This canal, which diverts water from the Ganges River, was a major feat of engineering and provided irrigation to a vast area. The establishment of the Thomason College of Civil Engineering in 1847 solidified Rurkee's role as a center for engineering education and innovation.
Besides IIT Roorkee, the city also houses several other educational and research institutions, contributing to its status as an educational hub. Rurkee is also a cantonment town, with a significant presence of the Indian Army.
The economy of Rurkee is supported by agriculture, industry, and the service sector, with educational and research institutions playing a significant role. Its location along the Delhi-Dehradun National Highway contributes to its connectivity and economic importance. The city serves as a gateway to the Himalayan pilgrimage sites and tourist destinations in Uttarakhand.
