Robert Jackson (Wantage MP)

Robert Jackson (born 16 November 1946) is a British politician who served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Wantage from 1983 to 2005.

Jackson was educated at St Edward's School, Oxford, and St John's College, Oxford, where he studied Modern History. He became an academic, holding positions at the University of Oxford.

He entered Parliament in 1983 as a Conservative MP for Wantage. During his time in Parliament, he held various positions, including Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Education from 1987 to 1992. He was known for his pro-European views.

In 2005, he defected to the Labour Party, citing his disagreement with the Conservative Party's direction on Europe. He contested Wantage as a Labour candidate in the 2005 general election but was defeated.

Since leaving Parliament, Jackson has remained involved in public life, primarily focusing on his academic interests and writing.
