Robert Grieve (artist)
Robert Grieve (born 1924, died 2009) was a Scottish artist known primarily for his landscape and still life paintings. He worked predominantly in oils and watercolour, often capturing the rugged beauty of the Scottish Highlands and Islands.
Grieve studied at the Glasgow School of Art from 1940 to 1942 and again from 1947 to 1949, his studies interrupted by military service during World War II. After graduating, he taught art at various schools in Scotland, including Glasgow School of Art itself, where he lectured in drawing and painting. He also lectured at Jordanhill College School.
His artistic style is often described as representational, though he incorporated elements of modernism in his handling of colour and light. Grieve’s work is characterized by a strong sense of place, reflecting his deep connection to the Scottish landscape. He was a member of the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Water Colours (RSW) and exhibited widely throughout his career. His works are held in numerous public and private collections, including the Scottish Arts Council and several Scottish local authority collections.
