Ribandar
Ribandar is a town located in the Ilhas (Tiswadi) district of Goa, India. Situated along the Mandovi River, it is historically significant as one of the former capitals of Portuguese Goa.
Ribandar is connected to Panjim, the current capital of Goa, by the Ponte de Linhares, a causeway built in the 17th century. This causeway, once the longest in India, is a prominent landmark and a testament to the town's historical importance.
The town's name is believed to be derived from the Portuguese word "Ribeira," meaning riverbank. Over the centuries, Ribandar has experienced significant impact from river erosion and flooding, impacting its geography and architecture.
Ribandar retains vestiges of its Portuguese past in its churches, houses, and the overall layout of certain sections. Its historical significance and proximity to Panjim make it a notable location within Goa.
