Reredos

A reredos is an ornamental screen or partition wall behind an altar in a Christian church. It may be constructed of wood, stone, metal, or a combination of materials. Reredoses are often decorated with carvings, paintings, sculptures, or mosaics and can range from simple panels to elaborate architectural structures.

The primary function of a reredos is to enhance the visual and symbolic focus on the altar, which is the central point of worship. It serves as a backdrop that draws attention to the Eucharist and can depict scenes from the Bible, the lives of saints, or other religious iconography. The presence of a reredos can also contribute to the overall aesthetic and liturgical atmosphere of the church.

While the term "reredos" is often used interchangeably with "altarpiece," there is a subtle distinction. An altarpiece typically refers to a painted or sculpted panel placed on the altar itself or immediately behind it. A reredos, however, is a larger and more substantial structure that extends beyond the dimensions of the altar and often rises to a considerable height.

Reredoses are particularly common in Anglican, Roman Catholic, and Lutheran churches, although they can also be found in some other denominations. Their design and style often reflect the architectural period and theological orientation of the church in which they are located.
