Reigan-ji (Kōtō)

Reigan-ji is a Buddhist temple located in the Kōtō ward of Tokyo, Japan. Officially named Enmei-in Reigan-ji, it belongs to the Jōdo-shū (Pure Land Buddhism) sect. The temple is particularly known for its association with Tomei (1626-1697), a prominent female philanthropist and nun who lived during the Edo period.

Tomei, also known as O-Tome, dedicated her life and fortune to supporting the poor, sick, and marginalized. Reigan-ji became a central hub for her charitable activities, and after her death, a statue of Tomei was enshrined within the temple. Consequently, Reigan-ji became a place of worship and remembrance for Tomei, attracting pilgrims and those seeking blessings related to compassion and aid for the less fortunate.

The temple grounds feature a statue of Tomei and various other Buddhist statues and monuments. Although not one of Tokyo's most famous tourist destinations, Reigan-ji holds significant local historical and religious importance, reflecting the legacy of Tomei's selfless acts and the enduring power of compassion within the community. The annual Tomei Festival held at Reigan-ji honors her memory and continues to be an important local event.
