Reganella
Reganella is a genus of Gram-negative bacteria belonging to the family Legionellaceae. These bacteria are rod-shaped and motile, often found in aquatic environments, both natural and artificial.
Reganella species are known for their environmental persistence and their ability to colonize man-made water systems, such as cooling towers and potable water supplies. While less frequently associated with human disease than its relative Legionella, Reganella has been identified as a potential opportunistic pathogen.
The genus is named in honor of Dr. Robert R. Regan, a microbiologist known for his contributions to the study of Legionella and related organisms.
Some identified species within the genus Reganella include, but are not limited to:
- Reganella pneumoniae
Further research is ongoing to fully characterize the pathogenic potential and ecological role of Reganella species. Identification typically involves specialized laboratory techniques due to the similarity to other Legionellaceae.
