Redd Foxx

John Elroy Sanford (December 9, 1922 – October 11, 1991), known professionally as Redd Foxx, was an American stand-up comedian and actor. Foxx gained widespread recognition for his starring role as Fred G. Sanford in the NBC sitcom Sanford and Son, which aired from 1972 to 1977.

Born in St. Louis, Missouri, Foxx began his career as a comedian performing in nightclubs. His comedic style was often characterized by its risqué and blue humor, reflecting the realities of the Black experience in America. He released a series of comedy albums throughout the 1950s and 1960s that further established his reputation as a groundbreaking comedian.

Sanford and Son, a television adaptation of the British sitcom Steptoe and Son, brought Foxx mainstream success. His portrayal of the irascible junk dealer Fred Sanford, constantly feigning heart attacks ("I'm coming to join ya, Elizabeth!"), became a cultural phenomenon. The show was notable for featuring a predominantly Black cast and addressing social issues relevant to the African American community.

Following the cancellation of Sanford and Son, Foxx starred in several other television series, including The Redd Foxx Show and The Royal Family. However, none achieved the same level of success as Sanford and Son.

Redd Foxx died on October 11, 1991, on the set of The Royal Family from a heart attack, ironically echoing his character's signature gag. His contributions to comedy and television are remembered for their groundbreaking nature and impact on popular culture.
