Ranger Regiment (United Kingdom)
The Ranger Regiment is a special operations-capable unit of the British Army, forming part of the Army Special Operations Brigade. It was established in December 2021 as part of the Future Soldier program, a restructuring of the British Army. The Regiment is designed to operate in complex, high-threat environments and focuses on building the capacity of partner forces through training, advising, and mentoring.
The Ranger Regiment is comprised of four battalions, each specialising in a different geographical region:
- 1st Battalion: Focuses on East Africa
- 2nd Battalion: Focuses on Eastern Europe
- 3rd Battalion: Focuses on West Africa
- 4th Battalion: Focuses on the Middle East
Recruits for the Ranger Regiment are drawn from across the British Army, and undergo a rigorous selection process. The Regiment is noted for its emphasis on physical and mental resilience, adaptability, and cultural awareness.
The Regiment's role includes countering malign actors, deterring adversaries, and contributing to international security and stability. They work closely with partner forces to enhance their capabilities, enabling them to better address their own security challenges. The Ranger Regiment's operations are conducted discreetly and often in support of wider government objectives.
