Quarter (United States coin)
A quarter is a United States coin worth 25 cents, one-quarter of a United States dollar. It is a metallic coin currently composed of two layers of cupro-nickel (75% copper, 25% nickel) bonded to a core of pure copper. The diameter of a quarter is 0.955 inches (24.26 mm) and its thickness is 0.069 inches (1.75 mm). The coin weighs 5.670 grams (0.200 oz).
The quarter has been produced since 1796 and has featured a variety of designs over the years. From 1932 to 1998, the obverse of the quarter featured a portrait of George Washington, and the reverse featured an eagle. Beginning in 1999, the "50 State Quarters" program was initiated, featuring a different design for each state in the United States on the reverse. This was followed by the "America the Beautiful Quarters" program (2010-2021), which featured national parks and other national sites. The "American Women Quarters" program began in 2022 and features prominent American women on the obverse (Washington) and a design symbolic of their accomplishments on the reverse.
The quarter is a widely used coin in American commerce and is accepted in vending machines, parking meters, and other automated payment systems. It is also collected by numismatists (coin collectors) due to its historical significance and varied designs.
