Pozhnia

A pozhnia (Russian: по́жня) is a type of drag sledge used in Russia and other parts of Eastern Europe, particularly in rural areas, for transporting goods and materials over snow or ice. Pozhnias are typically simple in construction, consisting of a flat wooden platform or frame supported by two or more runners. They are pulled by hand, animal (typically horses or oxen), or sometimes a tractor.

Pozhnias have historically been used for a variety of purposes, including hauling firewood, agricultural produce, building materials, and household items. Their simplicity and ability to navigate uneven or snow-covered terrain made them a practical mode of transport where wheeled vehicles were less effective.

While largely superseded by modern vehicles in many areas, pozhnias remain in use in some regions, particularly those with limited infrastructure or where traditional practices persist. They are also sometimes used for recreational purposes, such as ice fishing or winter festivals.
