Popstar (film)
Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping is a 2016 American mockumentary musical comedy film directed by Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone, and written by Andy Samberg, Schaffer, and Taccone, all members of the comedy group The Lonely Island. The film follows Conner Friel, also known as Conner4Real (played by Samberg), a pop star whose second album flops, leading to a crisis of confidence and fractured relationships with his childhood friends and bandmates, Owen (Taccone) and Lawrence (Schaffer).
The film is presented as a behind-the-scenes documentary, using the conventions of music documentaries to satirize contemporary pop music culture, celebrity worship, and the often-absurd demands placed on artists. Popstar features numerous cameos from musicians, actors, and other celebrities playing fictionalized versions of themselves, or acting as commentators within the documentary framework. These cameos contribute to the film's comedic effect and its commentary on the nature of fame and the music industry.
The plot revolves around Conner's attempts to regain his popularity after the disastrous release of his sophomore album, Connquest. His efforts to stay relevant involve increasingly desperate and misguided marketing stunts, ultimately leading him to re-evaluate his relationships and artistic direction. The film uses original songs, written and performed by The Lonely Island, to further parody pop music trends and tropes.
Despite positive reviews from critics praising its humor and satire, Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping was a box office disappointment upon its initial release. However, it has since gained a cult following and is considered a satirical gem by many. The film's soundtrack also received positive attention and remains a popular element of The Lonely Island's discography.
