Phaeax (architect)

Phaeax was an Athenian architect active during the 5th century BCE. He is primarily known for his involvement in the reconstruction and fortification efforts of the Piraeus, the port of Athens, following the Persian Wars. He is credited with contributing to the Hippodamian plan of the Piraeus, a grid-like street layout that was considered innovative for its time. This urban planning contrasted sharply with the more organic and less structured layout of Athens itself. While specific details of his contributions are limited, historical accounts suggest he played a significant role in developing the city's infrastructure and defensive capabilities. References to Phaeax exist in ancient texts, notably those of Thucydides and Plutarch, providing evidence of his historical significance as an architect and urban planner in ancient Greece. He is considered one of the key figures responsible for transforming Piraeus into a bustling commercial and military hub for Athens.
