General Directorate of Highways (Turkey)

The General Directorate of Highways (Turkish: Karayolları Genel Müdürlüğü, abbreviated as KGM) is the government agency responsible for the planning, construction, maintenance, and operation of the national highway network in Turkey. It operates under the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure.

KGM is responsible for maintaining and improving existing highways, as well as constructing new roads to meet the country's growing transportation needs. This includes tasks such as resurfacing roads, repairing bridges, installing traffic signs, and implementing road safety measures.

The agency plays a significant role in Turkey's infrastructure development and economic growth, facilitating the movement of goods and people across the country. The KGM also manages toll collection on certain highways.

Beyond simply managing the existing road network, KGM is involved in long-term planning for Turkey's highway infrastructure, taking into account factors such as population growth, economic development, and environmental concerns. They also collaborate with international organizations on transportation projects.

The General Directorate of Highways' organizational structure includes various departments and regional directorates responsible for specific aspects of highway management and development. Its budget is allocated by the Turkish government.
