Peter Jones (actor)

Peter Jones (1920 – 2000) was a British actor, screenwriter, and broadcaster. He was best known for his distinctive, lugubrious voice and deadpan delivery, which made him a popular choice for radio comedy, television, and voice-over work.

Jones began his career in repertory theatre before serving in the Royal Navy during World War II. After the war, he quickly established himself in radio, appearing in numerous shows including "In All Directions" with Peter Ustinov, and later "Huddlines" with Roy Hudd.

On television, he was a familiar face in sitcoms such as "The Rag Trade," "Mr. Digby Darling," and "Steptoe and Son." He also appeared in dramatic roles and presented children's programs.

A prolific screenwriter, Jones contributed to numerous comedy shows and films. He was the co-writer of the popular BBC radio series "Round the Horne" alongside Marty Feldman and Barry Took.

His voice was instantly recognizable, leading to extensive voice-over work in commercials and documentaries. One of his most memorable voice roles was as "The Book" in the BBC radio adaptation of "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy."

Peter Jones's career spanned several decades, and he left a significant mark on British comedy and broadcasting with his unique vocal style and comedic timing. He died in 2000, leaving behind a legacy of memorable performances.
