People's National Party (Fiji)
The People's National Party (PNP) was a political party in Fiji. It was formed in the lead-up to the 2006 general election, largely by supporters of the previous Qarase government who were dissatisfied with the Soqosoqo Duavata ni Lewenivanua (SDL) party. The party aimed to represent the interests of indigenous Fijians and advocated for policies promoting economic development and social justice.
The PNP was led by former civil servant and businessman, Ratu Osea Gavidi. The party campaigned on a platform of good governance, transparency, and accountability. They also emphasized the importance of traditional Fijian values and customs.
In the 2006 election, the People's National Party failed to win any seats in Parliament. After the election, the party struggled to maintain a strong presence in Fijian politics. Its activities were largely curtailed following the 2006 military coup. While not formally banned, the political climate made it difficult for the party to operate effectively. Information regarding the party's current status and activities is limited and suggests the party is no longer active in Fijian politics.
