Patrick Walsh (friar)

Patrick Walsh (d. 1649) was an Irish Franciscan friar of the Strict Observance, notable for his writings and his role in the Irish Confederate Wars.

Walsh was a member of the Franciscan Order, belonging to the stricter reform movement within the order. He served as provincial of the Irish Franciscan province. He was a strong supporter of the Irish Catholic Confederacy, a government formed by Irish Catholics during the Eleven Years' War (also known as the Irish Confederate Wars).

He is known for his writings defending the Confederacy and the Catholic cause, often engaging in theological and political debates. His works provide insights into the complexities of the period and the religious and political motivations of the Irish Catholics involved in the conflict.

Walsh was executed in 1649 during the Cromwellian conquest of Ireland, following the fall of Drogheda. He is considered a martyr by some Irish Catholics. His life and writings remain a subject of historical interest for understanding the religious and political dynamics of 17th-century Ireland.
