Panchiko
Panchiko is a British band formed in Nottingham, England, in 2000. They are primarily known for their lo-fi, shoegaze-influenced sound and the mysterious circumstances surrounding their early recordings and subsequent rediscovery.
The band's initial lineup consisted of Owain Davies (vocals, guitar), Andrew Wright (guitar), Shaun Ferreday (bass), and John Schofield (drums). They recorded and self-released an EP titled D>E>A>T>H>M>E>T>A>L in 2000. The EP was distributed locally, but the band soon dissolved.
Years later, a copy of D>E>A>T>H>M>E>T>A>L was discovered in a charity shop in Nottingham. This copy was then ripped and uploaded to the internet. The heavily distorted and degraded quality of the recording led many listeners to believe that the audio files were corrupted. Theories emerged online that the EP contained hidden messages or was part of an elaborate ARG (Alternate Reality Game).
However, the band members were eventually located, debunking many of the more outlandish theories. The degradation of the recording was attributed to a combination of factors, including the use of damaged CDs for duplication, and the effects of CD rot over time.
Panchiko reformed and began re-recording and releasing their older material, as well as creating new music, benefiting from a renewed interest generated by their online rediscovery. They have since toured and gained a significant following, establishing themselves as a prominent act in the independent music scene. Their sound continues to be characterized by its blend of dreamy melodies, distorted textures, and introspective lyrics.
