POP (typeface)
POP is a sans-serif typeface designed by Alan Meeks in 1969 for Letraset. It is characterized by its rounded, inflated forms and playful aesthetic, intended to evoke a sense of fun and informality. POP was popular in the 1970s and is often associated with the Pop Art movement, as the name suggests, and the design trends of that era. It was commonly used in advertising, posters, and children's books, and anywhere a bold, attention-grabbing font was desired.
The typeface is distinguished by its almost cartoonish letterforms. Key features include unusually rounded terminals on strokes, and generally circular letterforms, contributing to its soft and approachable appearance. While primarily used as a display typeface due to its strong character, POP is relatively legible at larger sizes. Over time, POP has experienced revivals and variations, appearing in both digital and analog formats. Its distinct style means it is generally used sparingly in contemporary design, employed mostly to specifically evoke a retro or nostalgic feel.
