Owls (band)

Owls was an American indie rock band formed in Chicago, Illinois in 2001. The band consisted of Tim Kinsella (vocals), Mike Kinsella (drums), Victor Villareal (guitar), and Sam Zurkowski (bass). All four members were previously members of the influential emo band Cap'n Jazz.

Formed following the breakup of Cap'n Jazz, Owls sought to explore more experimental and complex song structures compared to their previous band. Their music is characterized by intricate guitar work, unconventional rhythms, and Tim Kinsella's distinctive, often spoken-word-influenced vocals.

Owls released only one self-titled album, Owls, in 2001 on Jade Tree Records. The album, though not commercially successful, has since garnered a cult following and is considered a seminal work in the emo and math rock genres.

The band broke up shortly after the release of their debut album, citing creative differences and interpersonal tensions. The members went on to pursue various other musical projects. Tim Kinsella has been involved in numerous bands and projects, including Joan of Arc and Friend/Enemy. Mike Kinsella is known for his solo work as Owen and his drumming in American Football. Victor Villareal played in Ghosts and Offerings. Sam Zurkowski was less active in music following the band's split.

In 2014, Owls reunited and began performing live again. They subsequently released a second album, Two, in 2014 on Polyvinyl Records.
