Old Lace (comics)

Old Lace is a fictional character appearing in comic books published by Marvel Comics. She is a genetically engineered Deinonychus, a species of dromaeosaurid dinosaur, who possesses a telepathic and empathic link with Gertrude Yorkes, one of the members of the Runaways.

Character Overview

Old Lace was created in the 87th century by Dale Yorkes and Stacey Yorkes, the time-traveling parents of Gertrude Yorkes. They genetically engineered her to be a highly intelligent and loyal companion, specifically designed to be compatible with Gertrude's DNA. Upon Gertrude's parents' death at the hands of The Pride, Old Lace became Gertrude's constant companion and protector.

Abilities and Traits

Old Lace possesses several abilities due to her genetic engineering. She exhibits enhanced strength, speed, and agility far surpassing that of a normal Deinonychus. Her razor-sharp claws and teeth make her a formidable combatant. More significantly, she shares a telepathic and empathic bond with Gertrude. This bond allows Gertrude to command Old Lace telepathically and experience the dinosaur's senses. Any pain felt by Gertrude is also felt by Old Lace, and vice-versa. Following Gertrude's death, the bond transferred to Chase Stein, who inherited Gertrude's link with Old Lace.

Role in the Runaways

As a member of the Runaways, Old Lace serves as the team's muscle and one of their primary modes of transportation. Her loyalty to her bonded partner, first Gertrude and then Chase, is unwavering. She is often portrayed as fiercely protective of the other Runaways, and her presence provides a significant advantage in combat. While initially distrustful and even hostile towards strangers, she gradually learns to accept the other members of the team. She also provides comic relief within the group dynamic, often depicted engaging in behavior that is both ferocious and surprisingly endearing.

Publication History

Old Lace first appeared in Runaways #1 (July 2003), created by Brian K. Vaughan and Adrian Alphona. She has been a recurring character throughout the various volumes of Runaways and has also appeared in other Marvel titles.

Old Lace appears in the Runaways television series on Hulu, portrayed through CGI. Her portrayal mirrors her comic book counterpart, maintaining her connection to Gertrude Yorkes.
