Noongar

Noongar refers to the Aboriginal Australian people who are the traditional owners of the southwest of Western Australia. It also refers to their language and culture. The Noongar region extends from Geraldton on the west coast, south to Esperance on the south coast, and inland to areas including Southern Cross.

The term "Noongar" itself means "person" or "Aboriginal person" in the Noongar language. While there are dialectal variations within the Noongar language group, the term "Noongar" is widely used and accepted by the people it represents.

Noongar culture is rich and diverse, with a deep connection to the land and a strong tradition of oral storytelling, song, and dance. Kinship systems are central to Noongar social structure, and respect for elders is highly valued. Traditional practices include hunting, gathering, and the use of bush medicine.

The history of Noongar people since European settlement has been marked by dispossession, discrimination, and the loss of cultural practices. However, the Noongar community has demonstrated remarkable resilience and is actively working to reclaim and preserve its culture and language. Efforts are underway to revitalize the Noongar language, promote Noongar art and literature, and advocate for the rights of Noongar people.
